Way of the Will

Willful: Led by “I want,” desires, habit, convention, appetite, influenced, drifting, impulsive, passion, weakens will

Governed by Will: Choosing, deciding, conscious, definite, self-directed, “Premier of Mansoul,” aims beyond self, constant, strengthens character

Note: Obviously some characters change as the books progress. I’m not sure how I will handle that. For Frankenstein’s creature I added a footnote. I’m trying to decide now, concerning “Till We Have Faces”. And some characters are just hard to place, such as most of the ones in “The Iliad”.

Willful – Unworthy or Evil

  • Victor Frankenstein (Frankenstein, Mary Shelley)

Willful – Worthy or Good

  • ??

Governed by Will – Unworthy or Evil

  • Frankenstein’s Creature (Frankenstein, Mary Shelley) #1
  • Dr. Jekyll / Mr. Hyde (The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Robert Louis Stevenson) #2

Governed by Will – Worthy or Good

  • Mr. Utterson (The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Robert Louis Stevenson)

Footnotes (MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS!!!)

  1. Frankenstein’s creature is governed by will (other than, perhaps, the killing of William). At first he seeks good ends, but when he loses hope of acceptance he turns to evil.
  2. I counted Jekyll & Hyde as the same person, because I believe they were one mind, not two, as Jekyll claimed.
